Devastation from Hurricane Helene: A Son’s Journey to Rescue His Parents in North Carolina

Hurricane Helene Ravages Western North Carolina: A Personal Journey

The Search for Family Amidst Destruction

Forty-eight hours had passed since the devastating winds and torrential rains from Hurricane Helene swept through western North Carolina. Sam Perkins had yet to make contact with his parents and was filled with rising concern.

Journey Through the Mountains

On Saturday morning, Perkins set off in his vehicle to their remote home, which lies in a picturesque area between Spruce Pine and Little Switzerland, just an hour from Asheville. He described the region as a beautiful yet isolated gem in the mountains.

However, Helene had wreaked havoc in the area, demolishing roads, homes, and crucial utility infrastructure. “This area is completely cut off from resources in every direction,” Perkins remarked in his online updates.

Grim Toll of the Storm

Tragically, Hurricane Helene has claimed at least 93 lives across the southeastern United States, with North Carolina suffering significant impact. Persistent flooding has transformed roadways into rivers, leaving many stranded and in desperate need of assistance. Governor Roy Cooper described the situation as “one of the worst storms in modern history,” noting complications in response efforts with 280 roads still closed throughout the state.

The Hike to Help

When Perkins realized the extensive road closures, he abandoned his vehicle near a blocked highway and embarked on a hike towards his parents’ home. “No matter where you go, the roads are blocked by landslides or failures,” he explained. He recalled the numerous dangerous crossings he had to navigate, from wrecked roads to fallen trees, each additional challenge increasing his determination.

During his trek, Perkins encountered others affected by the storm, many trapped on the other side of the devastated highway. After more than three and a half hours and an arduous 11-mile hike that ascended 2,200 feet, he finally reached his parents’ residence.

A Reunion of Relief

“I have never been so relieved to see anyone OK,” Perkins exclaimed, relieved to find his parents safe in their 70s but resourceful despite the situation.

Counting the Blessings

His first actions were filled with need: he hugged them tightly, shed tears, relayed crucial updates on the outside world, and helped them assess the challenges ahead for their property.
