Devastation caused by recent DANA in Community of Madrid’s south: How to Help and Collaborate | Latest Updates and Request for Financial Assistance

The south of the Community of Madrid has witnessed the devastation caused by the passage of a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) in recent days. Torrential rains, strong winds and flooding have left a trail of destruction in several locations, including the shanty town of Las Sabinas in Móstoles, as well as in the municipalities of El Álamo, Aldea del Fresno and Villamanta.

The bishop of the Diocese of Getafe, Don Ginés García Beltrán, together with the vicar of Caridad Aurelio de Carrasquilla and the director of Cáritas in the south of Madrid, Jesús Casares, They are visiting the most affected areas due to this inclement weather. They have been able to see in person the help and support work that the parish priests of the towns in the southwest of the Community of Madrid are carrying out with the parish Cáritas teams.

In addition, they have listened to the needs demanded by the most vulnerable families punished by DANA in the Diocese of Getafe. To respond to this request for help, citizen collaboration is requested through Cáritas in the south of Madrid.

Also, they wanted to send a message of hope and show their support to the families of the people still missing after the natural disaster.

Situation of the Sabines

The settlement of Las Sabinas, in Móstoles, was one of the areas most affected by this storm. The intense rains caused floods that devastated the substandard housing where hundreds of families with children survive.

The Cáritas Diocesana team of Getafe that works with the people of the town has visited the families to check the situation of the houses after the passage of DANA.

As has been seen, the serious unhealthy situation in which they were already found has been aggravated by the devastating effects of the torrential storms, which overflowed the Guadarrama River through the town.

Many of these waters are fecal, so families are living among nauseating odors, rats, snakes, mud and garbage.

According to statements from one of the affected people, “when it rains a little, I take my children and some things and we go to sleep in the car because our house floods.”

The Móstoles City Council has enabled the Leonardo Da Vinci CEIP, located in Parque Coimbra, to relocate some of the Guadarrama-Las Sabinas families affected by DANA. Trucks have also been sent to collect garbage and debris accumulated by the flood. In addition, the mayor of the town visited some of the areas of the town.

Work continues in the area, but a large amount of mud persists, and they still do not have access to drinking water, a basic necessity that they lack and that Cáritas Diocesana of Getafe has been demanding from the different administrations to provide them until for families to be relocated.

Request for help

In the southwest municipalities of the Diocese of Getafe (El Álamo, Aldea del Fresno and Villamanta), extreme rainfall caused flooding in streets and homes, producing significant material damage.

In each of these locations, the different parish priests, together with parish and Caritas teams, are providing food and other needs to the most vulnerable families and to the work teams that have been established to clean homes and streets.

During this week, Cáritas Diocesana de Getafe has sent food and tools for cleaning and clearing debris from homes and streets.

There are many needs that have arisen in the population, but especially among the most vulnerable families. For this reason, the Diocese of Getafe, through Cáritas in the south of Madrid, calls for financial help, in order to cover the first needs of the most affected and needy population, as well as any need that arises as that normality is recovered.

The administrations and private entities involved are also urged to facilitate access to the corresponding aid in the event of a catastrophe like this.

As Bishop Ginés García observed, there are families who have lost everything and who need help even to buy back the school supplies and uniforms they lost after the DANA.

In addition, it is necessary to supply food and drinking water to all those who need it most.

How to collaborate

To collaborate with the victims of DANA in the south of the Community of Madrid, donations are invited through the Cáritas Diocesana of Getafe website www.caritas.es/diocesisgetafe or through the BIZUM with number 01182or by calling the headquarters telephone number 916 95 03 48.

With the money raised, the demands of the most vulnerable families in the southwest municipalities of the Diocese of Getafe and the town of Las Sabinas, affected by DANA, will be met.
