Devastation and Anger: Death Toll Rises to 111 in Maui Fire as Government Response Criticized

According to data released by the US state of Hawaii on August 16, the death toll from the fire in Maui in the state has risen to 111, and more than 1,000 people are still missing.

Families are devastated by the loss and loss of loved ones in the Maui fires. Due to the government’s ineffective disaster relief, local residents had to fight the fire spontaneously. They were also disappointed and angry at the government’s dereliction of duty.

Brenda’s mother-in-law lives in the small town of Lahaina, one of the hardest hit areas in Maui. Today, the house has been destroyed by fire, but the mother-in-law is still missing. Brenda’s husband had just provided a sample of his DNA to be compared with the victims. They have to accept the fact that the old man is already in danger.

Brenda, Maui resident: On the day we saw the house was gone, we accepted the fact, but never gave up hope. We care for each other when he (my husband) needs to talk. We would ask “how are you” and my husband would say “I’m fine” but I would say “no you’re fine” to him.

A Maui resident said that before the fire hit, they did not receive any official fire alarms or evacuation guidance. Many people ran in the wrong direction when evacuating in a hurry, and ended up entering the fire by mistake.

Jonathan Villioti, CBS: So, you didn’t know when you evacuated that you were actually walking in the direction of the fire?

Maui resident: No, I didn’t know that until I saw a huge mushroom cloud of black smoke that was building up and getting bigger and bigger. I felt fear and panic like I had never experienced in my life.

After the fire broke out in Maui, due to the delay in rescue, some residents had to adopt self-rescue mode. They used hoses and even bottled water to extinguish the fire. Residents are disappointed and angry at the government’s ineffective response on all fronts.

Volunteer: I’m surprised, I really don’t know what the hell is going on here. There should be firefighters everywhere.

Residents of Maui Island: It is obvious that the government does not pay attention, especially the United States has various rescue resources.
