Devastating Storm Hits Balkan Region, Causing Chaos and Injury

July 20, 2023 – 06:09

Emergency services in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia were trying to restore power and clear debris on Thursday after the chaos the day before.

Meteorologists indicated that the storm was extremely powerful and formed after a series of days with high temperatures. Experts say the extreme weather is likely fueled by climate change.

In other parts of Europe, the heat wave that was still active caused fires and public health alerts due to high temperatures.

In the Balkan region, the authorities reported hundreds of injuries, some of them seriously, after trees, pieces of roofs or other objects fell as a result of the strong winds.

In Tovarnik, in eastern Croatia, the firefighter died “tragically” during the storm, his unit said, without providing further details.

Three other people lost their lives on Wednesday in Croatia, one in Slovenia and another in Bosnia. Serbian police said emergency teams rescued 40 people and put out 20 fires caused by lightning.

Tens of thousands of people have lost power in Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia. The city of Sremska Mitrovica, in northwestern Serbia, imposed emergency measures due to the extent of the damage, including to the roof of the surgical wing of its hospital.
