Benghazi TV has credited an estimate according to which the number of deaths from floods in eastern Libya could exceed the threshold of 10,000 in Derna alone. This was reported by a councilor from various districts of Tripoli, Ahmed Wali. “The deaths could exceed ten thousand, in Derna alone,” Wali said, referring to “information deriving from Benghazi television”. “Even one of the ministers mentioned something like this”, reported the councilor, confirming again that “there are around 2,300 dead” and more than 6,000 missing.
“The death toll from the storm in Libya is enormous”, warns the international Red Cross. “We confirm from our independent information sources that so far the number of missing people has reached 10,000 people.” He reported this to journalists in Geneva Tamer Ramadan of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, by video link from Tunis. The death toll is expected to rise dramatically, with thousands of people missing, the organization warned today. “The death toll is huge and could reach thousands,” he added.
Meloni: Italy close to Libya, civil protection activated
The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, learned with pain of the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Daniel which hit the eastern part of Libya causing death, injuries and destruction. This was communicated by Palazzo Chigi. Italy expresses all its closeness and solidarity to the families of the victims and to the Libyan people and has activated the Civil Protection to be able to assist Libya affected by this emergency in the best possible way.
“The ‘Daniel’ storm hit Derna, a city in Cyrenaica, and the entire Libyan region. We immediately offered Defense help for the flooded areas, as we did for Morocco hit by the earthquake”. Thus the Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto on X.
EU, ‘heartbreaking images from Libya, ready to help’
“Heartbreaking images from Libya after the deaths and destruction caused by the floods, especially in the eastern part of the country. We send our most sincere condolences, on behalf of the EU, to the Libyan people and the families of the victims. The EU stands ready to help those affected by this disaster.” The President of the EU Council Charles Michel wrote it in a tweet. EU High Representative Josep Borrell also focused on Libya. “We are saddened by the images of devastation in #Libya, ravaged by extreme weather conditions which have caused the tragic loss of many lives. The EU is following the situation closely and stands ready to provide its support,” he wrote in a tweet.
