An incident unfolded at the Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Center in Madeira Beach, Florida, when an early morning fire claimed the lives of nearly all of the animals housed on the facility..

The fire, which required a defensive operation by firefighters due to difficult conditions, has devastated the center’s owner, Sonny Flynnand the entire community.

Shortly after 3 a.m. local time Thursday, the Madeira Beach Fire Department responded to the fire at the Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Center.

Despite their best efforts, the fire consumed the facility, resulting in the devastating loss of nearly all of the animals.

A post on the Facebook page of the center expressed deep sorrow and shock at the tragic incident, stating that “almost all the animals are gone“.

Sonny Flynn, the owner of the center, talked to WTSPa CBS-affiliated outlet, sharing his deep pain and personal connection to animals.

Flynn revealed that all of the mammals housed in the building perished in the fire, and many reptiles sustained injuries.

The center was home to a wide variety of animals, including small mammals, lizards, amphibians, turtles, tortoises, marine life, and alligators.

Flynn passionately expressed that the animals “didn’t deserve this” and described them as an integral part of his life, each with its own name and personality.

The man said that about 95% of the animals at the center were “pet delivery because people either didn’t know how to take care of them or couldn’t take care of them.”

The tragic fire not only affected the wildlife center, but also affected a neighboring restaurant, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, informa CBS.

The devastating incident has sparked an outpouring of support, with people expressing condolences and offering assistance.

The Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Center, established in 2011, had a strong focus on education and conservation, providing a safe haven for surrendered pets and orphaned native wildlife.

His mission was to ensure the humane and professional care of animals that could not be returned to the wild.

As the community mourns the loss, authorities are working diligently to determine the cause of the fire. An ongoing investigation seeks to shed light on the tragic incident and provide answers to the grieving community.

The impact of this tragic incident highlights the importance of wildlife conservation and responsible pet ownership.
