Devastating Earthquake in Morocco: Death Toll Rises to 2,497

The number of victims killed in a strong earthquake that occurred late at night on the 8th (local time) in Morocco, North Africa, increased to 2,497.

Morocco’s state-run daily newspaper ‘Le Matin’ reported on the 11th that the Ministry of the Interior provisionally calculated that 2,497 people had died and 2,476 were injured in the earthquake as of 10 a.m. that day.

The number of deaths increased by 375 in 12 hours from 2,122 as of 10 p.m. the previous day.

The number of casualties is expected to increase further as many of the injured are in critical condition and rescue and search operations for missing people are still ongoing.

Al Haouz Province, where the epicenter is located, suffered the most damage with 1,452 deaths, followed by Tarudant Province with 764 people and Chichaua Province with 202 people.

The newspaper reported that 18 people were killed in the medieval capital of Marrakech.
