German trailer premiere
Woody Allens “A Rainy Day In New York”
–
Fancy a classic Woody Allen movie again? Then nothing like “Rainy Day in New York”. Unfortunately not until December 5th, but you can already see the German trailer on n-tv.de.
You love him or you hate him, and the #MeToo debate has kept him in the negative headlines for the past few years. There are advocates and there are people who freak out when they hear his name. However, until proven guilty regarding his stepdaughter Dylan Farrow’s abuse allegations, the presumption of innocence applies. For Allen, however, Scarlett Johansson had recently spoken out, Farrow reacted outraged (n-tv.de reported). Opinions continue to differ about the 83-year-old.
However, his cinematic work undisputedly belongs to the first guard – as I said, if you like him. In his latest film, Allen tells the story of a college love who threatens to fail because of the normal madness of the city of New York and the film business. As is so often the case with Woody Allen, New York itself plays the first leading role in this declaration of love for the city that never sleeps. Otherwise, the incredibly enchanting Elle Fanning as Ashleigh college student and the beguiling Timothée Chalamet as her boyfriend Gatsby can be seen.
–
He is planning a romantic weekend in New York, because Ashleigh is supposed to interview the famous director Roland Pollard (Liev Schreiber) for the college newspaper. In the remaining time, Gatsby would like to show her his city: This is above all old New York with classics like the Bemelmans Bar and a carriage ride through Central Park.
But Ashleigh is invited by Roland Pollard to a screening of his latest film after the interview. While she slides from one unexpected situation to the next with him, his screenwriter Ted Davidoff (Jude Law) and the celebrated film star Francisco Vega (Diego Luna), she has to put Gatsby off again and again. Left on his own, he drifts through the streets of New York in the rain. And not only meets Chan (Selena Gomez), the quick-witted younger sister of his ex-girlfriend, he also has a conversation with his mother (Cherry Jones) that changes everything for him.
–
So at the end of a rainy day for both Gatsby and Ashleigh nothing is what they expected it to be. In “A Rainy Day in New York” Allen puts his city at our feet once again and conjures up a nostalgic as well as romantic portrait of the city of cities. At the same time, he tells a modern love story with a loving look at the small and large miracles and catastrophes in life.
As Gatsby, a native New Yorker from a wealthy family, Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name”, “Beautiful Boy”) once again proves his exceptional talent. As his girlfriend Ashleigh, who comes from Arizona and is not nearly as urbane as Gatsby is at least, Elle Fanning inspires (“The Seduced”, “Mary Shelley”). The rest of the cast plays casually – it almost seems as if Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Diego Luna and Liev Schreiber bring a lot – really a lot – of themselves into their roles.
You can get your own impression in the cinema from December 5th.
