Deutsche Bahn Postpones RRX Expansion Completion Date Between Düsseldorf and Cologne

The work on the RRX expansion between Düsseldorf and Cologne was actually supposed to be completed on September 8th. But the restrictions for travelers continue for the time being, and Deutsche Bahn has to postpone the resumption of train traffic between the two major cities again.

According to Deutsche Bahn, error messages occurred during the final test drives for the new electronic signal boxes in Leverkusen, Langenfeld and Düsseldorf-Reisholz. The cause of this must first be eliminated. Further testing and acceptance drives are then necessary.

This week, the tracks also had to be dismantled again due to suspected explosive weapons in order to check the eight-meter-deep area.

For this reason, the railway line between Düsseldorf and Cologne must remain closed until at least Tuesday, September 19th (9 p.m.). “We fought until the last minute to finish the construction work on time on Friday evening. Unfortunately, all of our efforts ultimately did not lead to success,” says Michael Kolle, project manager for the RRX expansion. Passengers are expressly asked to apologize.

Until the construction work is completed, regional and long-distance trains will continue to be rerouted. Whether the railway will be able to extend the existing replacement bus service is currently being examined. The railway said they were trying to at least organize emergency transport.

The following effects on local and long-distance transport will therefore continue to exist (as mentioned, it is still unclear whether the replacement buses mentioned will run):

There are no trains between Düsseldorf main station and Cologne-Mülheim. As a replacement, buses run between Düsseldorf main station and Langenfeld and between Langenfeld and Cologne-Mülheim. In addition, express buses are also in use between Leverkusen Mitte and Langenfeld and between Langenfeld and Düsseldorf-Benrath.

RE1 (RRX, National Express)

The trains will be rerouted and the stops in Düsseldorf-Benrath and Leverkusen Mitte will be eliminated. Alternatively, the trains stop in Opladen. In addition, buses run as a rail replacement service between Düsseldorf main station and Cologne-Mülheim.

RE5 (RRX, National Express)

The trains will be rerouted and the stops in Düsseldorf-Benrath, Leverkusen Mitte, Cologne-Mülheim, Cologne Messe/Deutz and Cologne Central Station will be eliminated. Alternatively, the trains stop at Neuss main station and Dormagen. In addition, buses run as a rail replacement service between Düsseldorf main station and Cologne-Mülheim.

All trains between Cologne and Düsseldorf or Dortmund via Hilden or Solingen will be rerouted. The journey time is extended by around 20 minutes. Some trains are canceled on certain routes.
