In the recent past, Deutsche Bahn (DB) has made it clear through actions that the Krefeld-Oppum location is of great importance for the maintenance workshop for the group. Now the next investment is pending. Deutsche Bahn wants to spend 18 million euros to build a new maintenance hall. A DB spokesman reported on Wednesday that construction work for the new, around 2,700 square meter property had already begun.
In the future, trains with major damage are to be repaired in the hall. Among other things, four so-called heavy-duty welding stands will be set up. At the same time, according to the group, other workshops will be relocated, thereby creating additional capacity. Completion is planned for the course of 2024, according to the DB spokesman.

“With our investment, we are sending a clear signal for Krefeld as a railway location and are securing more than 1000 jobs in North Rhine-Westphalia in the long term and are contributing to the traffic turnaround in the interests of strong rail,” says Krefeld plant manager Thomas Steiner. In the future, the number of long-distance travelers should increase to 260 million per year. In order to achieve this goal, up to 600 ICE trains would be on the road in Germany in the future. In this way, DB wants to improve the range of climate-friendly travel throughout the country. So that the many new trains can be serviced, cleaned and repaired, investments in the DB maintenance workshops are also necessary. The location in Krefeld also benefits from this. At the same time, the new ICE plant Dortmund-Hafen should be built in Dortmund by 2027.

The expansion of Deutsche Bahn’s maintenance workshop in Oppum into a highly modern service and maintenance center has been in full swing for several years. After the opening of a new unique universal assembly hall about a year ago and the new center for accident repairs of high-speed trains, a robot was tested that can carry out inspection and preparatory work independently. This ensures more efficient work processes, saves time and could also support other tasks in the future, reported a company spokesman. DB Vehicle Maintenance has tested a new maintenance robot together with “DB mindbox” (Deutsche Bahn’s start-up hub). Two young companies had applied with their idea and received the green light to use their prototype for a hundred days at the Krefeld plant and to develop it further, it said last year.

The universal assembly hall, which was completed in June 2021 after eight months of construction by Deutsche Bahn vehicle maintenance in Oppumer, is unique in Europe. A completely new maintenance hall was created from a building previously used as a warehouse. Since then, EMUs can be serviced at a state-of-the-art universal work station.
