Detroit will return to downtown – AutoHebdo

The idea had recently been mentioned by the organizers, it finally materialized and faster than expected. The Detroit Grand Prix will indeed be contested in the city center as was the case in the 1980s and until 1991 after receiving the approval of the city council this week.

« Today (Wednesday), Detroit City Council approved the relocation of the Detroit Grand Prix from Belle Isle to downtown streets starting in 2023, can we read in the press release of the IndyCar.

Representatives have participated in the past five weeks in meetings and listening sessions with Detroit residents, business leaders, community groups and local elected officials to discuss a return of the ordeal to its roots, the streets of Detroit. The positive reactions and enthusiasm we have noticed from the community about returning to the city center reinforces our belief that this relocation will bring significant benefit to the city, its residents and the local economy in the future.. »

As a reminder, the IndyCar, at the time known as the CART World Series, performed there between 1989 and 1991 with two victories for Emerson Fittipaldi and another for Michael Andretti before moving to Belle Isle in 1992. The F1 also raced there between 1984 and 1988. Ayrton Senna triumphed three times in Michigan while Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg each scored one.

While waiting to return to “downtown”, the 2022 Detroit Grand Prix will be contested at Belle Isle on the weekend of June 3 to 5.
