Detroit Red Wings Prep for NHL Global Series in Stockholm with Coach Derek Lalonde’s Plan

The Detroit Red Wings will soon travel to Stockholm for the Global Series. A busy schedule, but the team’s coach Derek Lalonde has a plan.

In order to quickly get back on track in terms of time differences and to get right into the rhythm of the day, the Red Wings will train as soon as they land. Science says it should be best for the players’ bodies to quickly find the right rhythm after the journeys across the Atlantic.

– We have to trust the science and the people we have there. When we land, we will train, we have been told, that the bodies will acclimatize best to the number of hours of sleep, says coach Lalonde.

The Red Wings head to Sweden after their game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday and then reload in Stockholm where the Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs and Minnesota Wild also participate in the 2023 NHL Global Series. The Global Series breaks the regular game schedule for the teams, who get days off both before and after the games at Avicii Arena.

– The league should have great praise. There is no easy way around it. Of course, our schedule before and after will be tight. There will be some periods in our schedule when we have to play back-to-backs, three on four, a little uncomfortable, says Lalonde to NHL.com/sv.

The Red Wings face the Senators on Thursday and the Maple Leafs on Friday, then they leave Stockholm to fly home and quickly get back into the routine at home, with a tight game schedule and new time adjustment.

– I got to experience it when I was away with Tampa, you got enough time before and enough time afterwards. It is very well thought out. It’s not perfect, but it never will be. I don’t love that we are the only team to play back-to-back there, but at the same time you get it back at the end. The league has done a good job.

Before the Red Wings go to Sweden, the team meets the Montreal Canadiens (on Friday night) and the Blue Jackets (on Sunday night).
