Monty Williams, coach of the Detroit Pistons, regretted this Tuesday that his team has reached 27 consecutive losses, which is the worst streak in the history of the NBA in a single season. Below that are only the 28 consecutive setbacks spread over two campaigns of the Philadelphia 76ers of the 2014-2015 season, the deepest depth of embarrassment in the American league.
The Pistons, who have a terrible record of 2-28lost 112-118 against the Brooklyn Nets and surpassed the Philadelphia 76ers from 2013-2014 and Cleveland Cavaliers from 2010-2011, which until today had the painful record of the worst streak in the league with 26 consecutive games lost in one fell swoop.
“They brought me in to change this team. Probably (this streak) It’s more my fault than anyone else’s. The players are putting a lot of heart into it. I have to get them in a position where they don’t feel tense,” acknowledged Williams, who landed this summer in the city of Motown with a stellar contract of 78.5 million dollars for six years.
Detroit started with a very promising start (22-8 partial) and closed the first quarter ahead, but the Nets came back in the second period and went into halftime already leading the scoreboard (54-61).
“The way we started today is something we’ve seen a lot this year. We have had very good starts at times; other times we have been in the hole. To start like this tonight and let it go in the second quarter… That quarter was the one that put us in the hole with a -13,” he reflected.
Williams also spoke of the exceptional performance of Cade Cunningham, who tried everything to keep the Pistons from falling with 41 points (fantastic 15 of 21 on field goals), 9 rebounds and 5 assists. The young man scored 37 of his points in an overwhelming second half and 19 of them in the last quarter alone.
“He did a wonderful job,” said the coach, who previously referred to some words Cunningham had said in the locker room after the game. “He spoke passionately about the things we need to do and that everyone needs to be in the same boat (…). “We have to be real about the situation we’re in,” Williams said.
“No one wants to be associated with something like that”, settled the coach, dejected and crestfallen like all his pupils, incredulous at confirming that they will enter the history books as one of the worst teams, without a doubt the one that has suffered the most defeats in a single season. 27 blows, one after another, and who knows if the definitive record will arrive very soon.
