Detonators 2023 International Military Exercise in Cekule, Latvia: Clearing Explosive Objects and Promoting Cooperation

From October 9 to 22, the international military exercise “Detonators 2023” will take place in Cekule, Ropaži district.

The main goal of the military exercise “Detonators 2023” is to clear the surface of the earth from explosive objects, as well as to promote mutual cooperation, exchange of experience and knowledge in the procedures for the destruction of explosive objects.

The military exercises “Detonators 2023” are organized by the 54th combat support battalion of the 2nd Vidzeme Brigade of the National Guard and more than 100 participants from the armed forces of Belgium, Denmark, France, Estonia, Latvia, the Netherlands and Germany will take part in them.

The Cekule ammunition warehouse was used for military purposes between 1920 and 1995. Currently, the 240-hectare area is still one of the largest objects contaminated with explosive objects in Latvia.

Since 1994, the surface of the territory has been cleared of unexploded ordnance, and every year specialists in neutralizing unexploded ordnance find and neutralize several hundred explosive objects.

In 2005, professional servicemen and national guardsmen of the 54th Combat Support Battalion of the National Guard, for the first time, inspected the surface of the former Cekule ammunition storage area as part of the training. During the training, a 10-hectare area was surveyed, where 236 explosive items were found, which were destroyed at the Ādaži landfill at the end of the training.

Since 2008 The 54th Combat Support Battalion of the National Guard organizes exercises once a year in the territory of the former Cekule ammunition warehouse, continuing a planned inspection of the surface of the territory, within the framework of which all found explosive objects are neutralized and destroyed.

Starting from 2012, experts in the destruction of explosive objects from NATO and EU countries participate in the training. Since 2012, 10,818 explosive items, as well as more than one ton of light rifle ammunition, have been found, neutralized and destroyed in the former Cekule ammunition storage area.

For the attention of residents

We invite residents to treat the ongoing exercises with understanding and, for safety reasons, not to visit the territory of the former ammunition warehouse in Cekule.

If you find explosive items, please do not touch them, do not try to disassemble them for examination and do not move them. The place where the items were found should be fenced off and marked as far as possible. The find should be reported to the nearest State Police department (phone number 110) or by calling phone number 112 and a brief description of the found object should be provided, as well as the instructions received should be followed.
