WASHINGTON (Kyodo News) – The U.S. Navy announced on the 3rd that two carrier strike groups, the state-of-the-art nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford and the aircraft carrier USS Dwight Eisenhower, conducted exercises in the Eastern Mediterranean. As fighting continues between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic organization Hamas, the aim is to demonstrate the readiness of the U.S. military and deter Israel’s hostile forces such as Iran.
The exercise lasted three days and involved more than 11,000 U.S. military personnel. Training included ballistic missile defense, maritime replenishment, and maritime security. Italian warships also participated.
The U.S. Navy emphasized that by deploying two aircraft carriers to the Middle East region together with allies and friendly nations, it “demonstrates the ability to respond to any unexpected situation.”
