For those who didn’t know the first game, the story has the couple of Pikachu and Tim Godman, is about a college student trying to discover the truth about his father’s disappearance. Tim has the ability to understand everything Pikachu says, so they can work as a team to solve mysteries.
The game is set in Ryme City, a city where humans and Pokémon coexist and they even help each other in different tasks. Everyone has a role in the city, but humans do not understand Pokémon, since they will only repeat their name as we know it in the main series.
As Tim is the only human who clearly understands Pikachu, they decide to work as a team so that they can investigate and question both humans and Pokémon and have a very clear picture, but they must act discreetly so that other humans do not suspect that there is a special connection in our protagonists.
The plot of the game places us two years after the 3DS titlebut we have a short summary to find out more about the mystery of Detective Harry, Tim’s father. In the end it is not necessary to know the original title, the way in which Pikachu tells it is brief, simple and direct, we must remember that it is a title aimed at the entire public.

Being a graphic adventure, the dialogues and the story are the core of everything. The beginning can be very slow due to all the details that we must know, but the minutes pass and the situation improves, taking on a more dynamic pace. If we are looking for a dynamic or action game, ultimately we should look the other way.
The main objective of the story may be “simple”, but as usual, we will have to interact with many humans and Pokémon to discover that they also have many problems, mysteries that can be solved in a few minutes and that are largely charming.

The game is very clear from the beginning and if we are new, they invite us to take a tutorial to learn how we can interact with the environment to discover the mystery that surrounds the city. Are very simple minigames where we are often accompanied by other Pokémon who must help Pikachu to find more clues.
We also have investigation sequences where we must take out our magnifying glass and find something strange in the environment. All the information we obtain is automatically written down in the notebook and if we have the necessary information, we can try to solve the case by deducing an answer.
In reality, three or four sentences will appear to us to decide which is correct, in case we make a mistake, nothing happens, it is difficult to fail since with some research we will find the correct path.
Another way to change the pace of the game and not feel so repetitive is to have puzzles that we solve very quickly, some stealth phases and button sequences. It is not a title where we will have to repeat the scenes since they almost never fail, the important thing is that the change of facets is constant, which is appreciated.
We can play the game complete in about 15 hours, we will not have replayability as such since it would be visiting history. In the case of repeating a scene, there are episode cards in the menu to select the point we want to go to.
There are a couple of elements in the configuration that are appreciated and it is the possibility of increasing the speed at which the dialogues appear and allowing the conversation to flow without having to press the button after each sentence.
There is always a first time
Unfortunately the visual section is a shame, we have seen many Nintendo Switch games with incredible graphics and in the case of ‘Detective Pikachu: The Return’, it is not a demanding title and the results are very poor. It looks more like a remake of a 3DS version than a game created for the console.
We notice this detail a lot in the humans, with flat designs and without the slightest charismaQuite the opposite with Pokémon, the models are up to par and so are their animations. They seem like two different games if we see humans against Pokémon. We are not looking for realism, but we are looking for fit.
One detail that we don’t like is the localization, the game has voices in English and Japanese, while the Texts can be selected in Spanish. The problem is that the dialogues are not as enjoyable, even though they have many jokes and references to the Pokémon franchises.
‘Detective Pikachu: The Return’ is the ideal game for the little ones and novices In graphic adventures, the story is fun from start to finish and we are constantly surprised with plot twists. Just because it’s a simple game doesn’t mean it can’t be exciting.
