Detecting Diabetes through Dental Examinations: Signs to Look Out for

Brushing teeth. According to dentists, there are typical signs of diabetes that can be detected during dental examinations.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Diabetes is a chronic disease that often appears without symptoms. Early signs of this disease do not always make a person feel sick. Therefore, being sensitive to the changes that occur in the body is very important.

One of the early signs that could indicate someone has diabetes is fruity breath and dry mouth. This was revealed by a dentist from Ruh Dental UK, Rizman Mahmood.

“As dentists, we are at the forefront of detecting serious health conditions such as: diabetes which can develop in the body without the knowledge of the sufferer. This is why you should visit the dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings,” said Mahmood, as quoted from ExpressTuesday (27/6/2023).

Other signs in the mouth that can be an indication of diabetes include bleeding gums, sore gums, gum disease, bad breath, easily dislodged or loose teeth, canker sores in the mouth, and yeast infections in the mouth. Mahmood explained that bleeding and sore gums could be a symptom of gum disease that appears in people with diabetes.

“If you have diabetes, you are more likely to have gum disease known as periodontal disease. This is inflammation of the gums and the bone around the teeth,” explains Mahmood.
