The Nigerian navy has questioned sailors detained in the African country of Equatorial Guinea. The vessel has been inspected. Their phone was seized by Nigerian forces. Relatives said communication with people on board was cut off. In the name of the investigation, the force had ordered all crew to resume their previous work on the ship for two days.
The failure to arrive from the Indian Embassy in Nigeria greatly concerned the ship’s crew. There are 16 Indians on board including three Malayali and 10 from Sri Lanka, Poland and the Philippines. Equatorial Guinea handed them over to Nigeria on Friday. Guinea seized the vessel on August 9, accusing it of violating the maritime border.
India’s intervention is only explicit
While Sri Lanka, Poland and the Philippines are intervening forcefully to free the crew, India’s intervention is in name only. Out of a total of 26 people, there are 10 people on board from Sri Lanka, Poland and the Philippines. 16 people are Indians. The complaint of the people on board and their relatives is that India is not carrying out any significant diplomatic intervention. Only the press release from the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Union is in progress. Diplomatic interventions are used by other countries to free their own citizens. If it works, the Indians on board hope they too will benefit
