Detainee escapes: man tied sheets together and swam across moat

Justice

A detainee escaped from the Hoogstraten penal institution on Monday night. The Prison Service confirms this. The man is still missing.

The detainee clambered out of his window along a string of knotted sheets. Once downstairs, the next obstacle awaited him: the prison moat. He could swim across it. The man has been missing ever since.

“The police were immediately informed on Tuesday morning,” said Valérie Callebaut of the Prison Service. “A search was immediately carried out together with the staff. Hoogstraten prison has a semi-open regime and the detainees serving their sentences there have the profile to live in a communal regime.”

The escaped detainee was serving a conviction for drug offences.
