The German police released the details of the hostage-taking in the “Bruhels” district of Dresden today, Saturday.
Police said the attacker died after being seriously injured during the operation to free the hostages.
According to police information, the 40-year-old offender killed his 62-year-old mother in an apartment building. Police found the woman dead at around 07:20 (local time).
Police therefore assume that the perpetrator went to an office building where Radio Dresden was located, where shots were heard this morning before he was taken hostage in the Altmarketgallery shopping centre.
At the Altmarket Gallery, the man took an employee and a child hostage. Police have evacuated downtown and surrounding areas.
Several people were placed in a bus of the Dresden public transport company and treated there. The Stretzelmarkt also remained closed and reopened this afternoon.
Due to the detention, the police have asked residents to avoid downtown Dresden.
Subsequently, the police announced the end of the detention incident, the injury of the offender and the safety of the two hostages.
A police spokesman said the perpetrator suffered from a very obvious psychological disorder. He added, “We strongly believe he is mentally ill,” explaining that everything points to it.
