ANNOUNCEMENTS•
More details became known from the autobiography of the British prince Harry, because his book was already accidentally on sale in Spanish bookstores today. British media and international news agencies including Reuters, Sky News and the tabloid The Sun obtained a copy through that route. The books are said to have been removed from stores by now.
Reuters reports that a news agency reporter simply received a Spanish-language copy of Replacement could buy in a large bookstore in Madrid, although the book will not be officially released until Tuesday. A spokesperson for the autobiography’s Spanish publisher says it has clearly been agreed that the book shouldn’t be on shelves until Tuesday. “Everything indicates that some buyers have not complied with that agreement.”
British media pay close attention to the leaked book, which is number one on Amazon’s bestseller list for pre-sales alone.
Sky News answered several questions about the book in a special hour-long online broadcast:
From BBCwho does not personally own a copy of the book, concludes on the basis of what has been leaked that Harry makes “a deluge of sensational claims” in his autobiography.
For example, the prince claims that he and his brother William tried to talk their father out of marrying Camilla, which Charles did in 2005. Harry writes that Camilla was indeed welcome in the family, but that marriage was not necessary to this. The brothers would finally make peace with their father’s second marriage, eight years after their mother Diana’s death.
Nazi uniform
In his book, Harry also pays attention to the much-discussed incident when he wore a Nazi uniform to a costume party in his twenties, write the British media. In his own words, he was urged to do so by Prince William and his later wife Kate, with whom William had just had an affair. It was “one of the biggest mistakes of my life,” Harry would say in his autobiography.
However, according to the BBC, one of the book’s most striking testimonials is the incident between Harry and his brother William which The Guardian has already reported this morning. During an argument over Harry’s wife Meghan Markle, William is said to have knocked his younger brother to the floor. William is said to have called Meghan difficult, rude, and annoying, among other things.
The British royal family did not respond to the coverage, in line with the motto “never explain, never complain— which is almost always the guideline for media disclosures.
Podcast, documentary in interviews
Harry’s book is part of a series of statements he and his wife seek publicity with. In March 2021, the couple opened up about Meghan’s mental health in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. The former actress also said in that televised conversation that her son’s skin color was a concern within the British royal family.
Meghan came out with her podcast last August. More than two months later, a Netflix documentary followed in which she and Harry talk about their negative experiences with the British tabloid press and their estrangement from the royal family. The two distanced themselves from the royal family in 2020 to lead a different, more independent life. For example, they wanted to earn money themselves.
In addition to Harry’s autobiography, there are also two interviews with an American and British broadcaster. Both will air on Sunday and are all about the British prince’s book. British channel ITV has already released a snippet in which Harry says he doesn’t want to commit to going to his father Charles’ coronation in May.
