TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS.- The Public Order Military Police (PMOP) announced this Monday that it will proceed to destroy the weapons and illegal objects that were confiscated in different prisons in Honduras.
During the press conference held at its headquarters, the military exhibited powerful weapons that were seized from organized crime structures during the “Faith and Hope” operation.
Among the arsenal that the criminals incarcerated in the prison system had were weapons of different calibers, homemade weapons, bullet casings, bulletproof vests and even gas masks.
In addition to the dangerous weapons dismantled, the uniformed officers also seized televisions, irons, sound equipment, various electrical appliances, drugs, and cash.
“You can witness the arsenal, money, drugs, communication systems, antennas and televisions that you see here, everything that the members of the maras and gangs had in the prisons. The mission of the Military Police is to dismantle these schools of crime,” said Defense Minister José Manuel Zelaya.
“These are only the first findings, the due process will be carried out through the Oabi so that the goods that can be reused for work or social purposes have that destination. In the same way, these weapons will be destroyed and incinerated so that they will never be used again,” added the official.
After the tragic massacre of 46 women in the National Women’s Penitentiary for Social Adaptation (PNFAS), the Military Police took control of the penal centers in Honduras by order of President Xiomara Castro.
In recent weeks the country’s prison system has been subject to searches and arduous operations that are similar to what happened in El Salvador.
During the inspections of the prisons, the military authorities have seized weapons and other illicit objects, which is a sign of the power of organized crime inside the prisons.
