Which brings thoughts back to August 2020, when popular anger over the death of George Floyd and the shooting of black American Jacob Blake mobilized crowds. The Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality resulted in widespread destruction. Vigilantes formed to protect homes and shops.
Gun fanatic Rittenhouse was one of the many who took to the streets with medical devices and a semi-automatic rifle, where after being threatened he shot three people. Two of them died. Emergency, he said himself. The jury went along with this in a lawsuit that has come to symbolize the contradictions.

The verdict – acquittal of all suspicions – sparked new anger. On Friday, houses and cars were destroyed. Protesters marched through Crowley Park in New York “jumping on wagons, steel American flags,” said Queens driver Robert Holden.
There were also protests in Chicago and Kenosha, but they were nowhere very large.
