Cyriel Dessers has been directly important to Nigeria. The Feyenoord striker scored his first goal for the Nigerian national team during his debut in the starting line-up.
Nigeria eventually lost 2-1 to Mexico in the friendly match. Dessers was sidelined for Chiamaka Madu after 81 minutes.
Nigeria is currently preparing for the start of the qualifying series for the African Cup of Nations. The qualifying series will start next week with matches against Sierra Leone (June 9) and Mauritius (June 13). Another friendly game against Ecuador is scheduled for July 3.
Doubts about Dessers’ future at Feyenoord
Dessers and Feyenoord are still in talks to continue together for longer. Wim Kieft has doubts about whether the Rotterdammers are doing it wisely. “Technically he is not very skilled and that is why he sometimes does not function as a point of reference,” the former football player tells De Telegraaf.
It remains to be seen whether the club can reach a personal agreement with Dessers. After a dream season, he will not hesitate to make a financial hit at the age of 27. That will factor into his choice for next season. Understandable, because you wonder if he will ever have another year like that.”
