Despite winning bronze in Paris 2024, Conade reduces scholarship to Alejandra Valencia

Mexico City. Mexican archer Alejandra Valencia denounced on Thursday that the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport (Conade), chaired by former athlete Ana Guevara, reduced her sports scholarship despite having won a bronze medal in the team category at the recent Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Tokyo 2020 medalist also detailed on her social media that when she went to do the paperwork to apply for her scholarship, she noticed that it had been reduced.

“I came to sign the paperwork for my scholarship and I found out that due to the operating rules that govern Conade, they lowered my scholarship after the Olympic medal. Well, thank you very much,” the native of Hermosillo, Sonora, posted on her social media.

The 29-year-old archery specialist, along with Ana Paula Vázquez and Ángela Ruiz, won one of the five medals (three silver and two bronze) that the Mexican delegation obtained in Paris 2024.

It is worth mentioning that the archer received the National Sports Award in 2023, has also won three gold medals at the Pan American Games and obtained the silver medal at the 2023 World Championships in Berlin.

Conade acknowledges reduction of scholarship

Hours later, Conade issued a statement in which it acknowledged having reduced Valencia’s scholarship, relying on the sports incentive table in the organization’s operating rules for 2024.

She indicated that after the archer obtained the runner-up position at the 2023 Berlin World Cup, she was awarded a scholarship of 46 thousand pesos, corresponding to the sports incentives for individual events in world tournaments.

However, by winning bronze in the women’s team event at the 2024 Olympic Games, her scholarship changed to 36 thousand pesos, corresponding to a third place in team competitions at a summer event.

However, she did not clarify whether they would consider Valencia’s situation as she is the first Mexican archer to win two Olympic medals, in addition to having reached the top positions in the last year in the highest international competitions.
