Ukraine has revealed its desire to demobilize soldiers from the army at the end of their mandatory military service, despite Russia’s ongoing war against the country.
Yesterday, Friday, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in a video speech that serious issues related to mobilization, demobilization and rotation were discussed at a meeting of the General Staff.
Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov, said that the president asked the military leadership to demobilize these soldiers.
A specific plan will be presented next week. Danilov indicated that the demobilization process would begin in the near future, while Zelensky was more conservative.
Zelensky announced this during a joint press conference with Latvian President Edgars Rinkević.
About 820,000 soldiers currently serve in the Ukrainian army.
This announcement comes in the wake of demonstrations by relatives of recruits, who demanded more rotation in order to give fighters the opportunity to recover for a longer period of time.
However, according to the current law, the demobilization of soldiers cannot be done very smoothly, so a new law on this must be approved.
