Despite the flu wave, GPs see few patients with complaints

There has been an official flu wave in the Netherlands since mid-March, but GPand see relatively few people who come to the office with flu symptoms. Due to the corona pandemic, the flu figures cannot be compared well with previous years, research institute Nivel tells NU.nl.

“We suspect that many people with complaints do a corona test and start to get sick at home if it turns out to be negative, without going to the doctor. As a result, our flu figures may be lower than normal and not easy to compare with previous years,” says Nivel researcher Mariëtte Hooiveld.

The National Association of General Practitioners also thinks that many people are sick at home if it turns out that their complaints are not caused by the corona virus. That while they may have gone to the doctor with the same complaints before the corona pandemic. “Strictly speaking, the number of people with a flu-like illness that comes to the GP is still below the epidemic limit,” said Hooiveld.
