It is also noteworthy that there were 85 first-time donors in 2020. The chief organizer of the blood donation, Petra Schmidt-Broccucci, is delighted, as is the DRK board chairman Dieter Jagiella. “We would therefore like to thank once again all blood donors who were able to secure medical care with their blood and thus also save lives,” says Dieter Jagiella.
However, a tremendous show of strength was necessary to enable blood donations in corona times and this result at all. This included a newly created registration process for blood donation (hotline 0800/1194911 or online www.blutspendedienst-west.de or via the DRK blood donation app), which is now used by many donors. “Extensive planning in the individual blood donation locations was just as important. Among other things, walking routes had to be set with clear distances to avoid contact between the donors. The refreshing snack after the blood donation, which was so popular up to now, also had to fall victim to a well-filled packed lunch, ”report the volunteer DRK helpers.
The contents of the packed lunches (pastries, muesli bars, salami, apples and drinks) were freshly procured and packed. There was plenty of work for Petra Schmidt-Broccucci to cope with the 19 appointments and to assign 10 to 20 helpers depending on the number of donors. Even shortly before Christmas, on December 22nd, 163 donors came forward, who were taken in and looked after. On Wednesday, January 27th, the first blood donation of the new year is due. It is planned in Thüle.
Dieter Jagiella reports that the other areas of responsibility of the local DRK association have continued to be worked hard. The team from the used clothing collection, which was honored a year ago with the honorary award of the community foundation at the New Year’s reception of the city of Salzkotten, continuously emptied the used clothing containers and forwarded them to the Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel for recycling.
The well-trained willingness to work, who was responsible for medical services at major events, is still in great demand. At the beginning of the pandemic, among other things, in the Paderborn district as an informant for the population, then in the crisis in the Gütersloh district and now even over Christmas and New Year with corona tests in old people’s homes. “Readiness actually means to be always ready for every conceivable emergency or disaster,” emphasizes the CEO.
“We are well positioned in terms of personnel, but we look forward to new active helpers in all areas who can perform important voluntary tasks for society and also for the benefit of the citizens of our city in our local DRK association.” In addition, there are many opportunities in the medical service area to train personally. “Helping other people and being socially committed is a lot of fun and is also an important part of the quality of life for the helpers,” emphasizes chairman Dieter Jagiella.
