Immediately after the last World Cup race in February, the Italian biathlon star Dorothea Wierer said that the mass start may have been her last race. She subsequently ended the season to consider the future.
Now the 34-year-old announces that she will, after all, continue beyond the Olympics on home soil in 2026.
“It would have been shameful to end this part of life in this way, not to have been able to give 100 percent. And I want to continue to the Olympics in Milan-Cortina,” she says at a press conference, according to the International Biathlon Union.
“It was not an easy decision, because there are many sacrifices to be made, but I have already planned the training season and have started it together with my group and people I trust”.
Wierer had the last season ruined by illnesses and worse results. She competed in the WC in Nove Mesto, where two tenth places were the best. She has three Olympic medals, twelve World Cup medals and 75 podium places in the World Cup on the merit list.
