“The situation is far from under control,” he warned, showering hopes of a rapid lifting of restrictions in the face of a virus that has become “more dangerous”.

The government of Angela Merkel itself had opened the door on Thursday to relaxations, including a possible reopening of schools before the end of the month.
The Chancellor and the leaders of the 16 regions meet on Wednesday to negotiate a possible lifting of some of the restrictions in place for more than a month. The dissemination of variants could however call into question a possible lifting of the bans.
These variants “do not yet dominate” in Germany, according to Wieler. The British variant thus represents less than 6% of the cases detected. But it is now present in 13 of the 16 German regions.
Germany had 2.264 million officially declared cases on Friday (+12,908 in 24 hours) and 60,597 deaths (+855).
