“Probably the largest return campaign in Swiss history,” said Hans-Peter Lenz, the EDA crisis manager, at a press conference a few weeks ago. Almost 1200 Swiss travelers have now been brought back on charter flights. But thousands are still stuck in every corner of the world.
–
But there are also Swiss people who, despite Corona, deliberately do not want to return to their home country. For example, 25-year-old Swiss Michael Gerber. He has been traveling around the world for more than two years. Gerber has been stuck in a small apartment in the city of Medellín for two weeks now. There is a curfew across Colombia to contain the coronavirus. The Swiss can only get out for purchases.

«I have no residence in Switzerland»
Gerber would have had the chance to fly back to Switzerland, but his situation prevented him from doing so: «I don’t have a place of residence in Switzerland. If I had one, I would probably go back, »he says to BLICK. In addition, he would endanger himself and other people through his return journey.
–
The young Swiss is not afraid: «I would feel equally safe in both countries. I have the privilege of living in a rich neighborhood in Medellín, ”explains Gerber. Even after the Corona crisis, the young Swiss will continue to travel the world.

Against boredom, she learns Spanish and plays the guitar
The young Swiss Anna Kuhn also stays abroad. Despite the Corona crisis, she wants to end her exchange year in Ecuador. “I decided to stay because otherwise I couldn’t really say goodbye to the people here,” says Kuhn to BLICK. The return trip is currently more dangerous than staying here, the Swiss says.
–
She lives in Ecuador alone with her host mother. But she was not bored in quarantine: “I continue to learn Spanish and was able to borrow a guitar that I can practice on,” says Kuhn. She speaks to family and friends in Switzerland every day to find out about the current situation.

Kuhn is not afraid of being infected with the corona virus. But: “Nobody can assess the development and that scares me a little.” (spi)
