Despite Corona, many people, firecrackers and rockets: quiet turn of the year in Frankfurt

The start of the new year in Frankfurt is usually boisterous and turbulent. This year, however, the picture was very different.

At midnight, numerous people gathered on the banks of the Main and on the bridges that were not closed. According to a police spokesman, there were no major incidents and it remained largely peaceful. The police were on the move with numerous emergency services throughout the city center. The mood was mostly relaxed and peaceful, with some dancing in the streets.

With mild temperatures, many people were out and about in the Zeil shopping mile, similar to summer evenings. A long queue formed in front of a club, and according to an employee, all seats were sold out.

Small groups were out and about in the old town and on the Main bridges, and the alcohol level initially remained low. Even when the “Eiserne Steg”, one of the pedestrian bridges, was closed for five hours at 10 p.m., most went back to the shore without protesting.

“If it stays like this, it will be a problem-free night,” hoped a policeman at the closed bridge. The city of Frankfurt had banned firecrackers and the launching of rockets in the city center and other areas where large numbers of people usually gather to welcome the New Year.

These include the Mainufer, Alt-Sachsenhausen and the Bahnhofsviertel. At these focal points, the police expected many people.

Four Bad Vilbelers made the best of the Corona measures and organized their New Year’s Eve dinner with camping chairs, a folding table and a handcart in the open air. “Starter at the Alte Oper, main course at the Römer and dessert on the banks of the Main,” they revealed their plans.

At midnight, a little waltz was announced on a Main bridge against the backdrop of the skyline.
