Hamburg’s film industry had a tough year because of the corona pandemic. Film sets need hygiene consultants, the measures make shooting several tens of thousands more expensive. Nevertheless, many cinema productions are planned.
In times of the corona lockdown, gastronomy and culture are still on a standstill. Nothing works live. Movies are a popular distraction at home. But how is the TV and film industry doing? She also had a tough year in Hamburg. You had to rethink in order to work at all.

There were also problems with the production of the new Hamburg crime scene. It’s called “Deadly Flood” and it will air later this month. It was filmed before the corona pandemic, but the orchestral music plays an important role and it caused difficulties in post-production.
The orchestra recordings could not be carried out as planned due to the corona pandemic, explains Björn Vosgerau from Wüstefilm. The broadcast therefore had to be postponed.
Some shooting canceled or postponed
But there were even bigger problems: One film had to be postponed entirely, filming for another had to be stopped and restarted in November. Something like that quickly costs a lot of money.
Hygiene concept allows filmmakers to work
Like Wüstefilm, all filmmakers fared last year. The first lockdown was shocked, but shortly afterwards a hygiene concept was developed that at least allows them to work.
Industry wants to meet demand for films
The filmmakers wanted to work, explains Alexandra Luetkens from the Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein Film Fund. “They want to produce content because it is needed. You can see that now in this situation where everyone is hungry for art and culture.” At the moment you can at least watch films and series on television or via streaming services.
No contact for actors outside the film set
There should now be a hygiene advisor on each set to ensure that the measures are followed. Not an easy task when there are usually around 40 people or more working on the set. For actors this means that they are blocked from contact outside of the set. Around 50,000 euros have to be added to the budget for the hygiene measures on set.
Cinema productions and series planned for 2021
Nevertheless, the Hamburg filmmakers remain brave. 14 films are currently planned for Hamburg and Schleswig Holstein for 2021, said Alexandra Luetkens from the Hamburg-Schleswig-Holstein Film Fund. Then there are the series and crime series.
No Corona film planned in Hamburg so far
So it goes on in Hamburg. No corona film is yet being planned – the pandemic will certainly provide enough material for this.
