Despite Corona: Bagel Bar brings New York flair to Hamburg

Winterhude –

Hearty bagels, sweet pastries and coffee to wake you up: The “New York Bagel Bar” opened on Saturday and wants to bring the flair from the American city to Hamburg. MOPO was there when it opened.

Around ten o’clock the first customers were already waiting to try the American delicacies from the newly opened shop. So that they didn’t have to wait too long, Laura Nahe, Pia Wehling, René Westphal and Jonas Conrad distributed vegan cinnamon rolls and other delicacies in the queue in front of the bagel bar. The four of them opened their restaurant at Mühlenkamp in Winterhude together. The inspiration for this came from New York.

Laura Nahe discovered her weakness for bagels in the American city. “I was together with Pia Wehling for a semester abroad in New York and we had a bagel bar right next to the apartment. We liked to pick up something on the way to university, as many people do there. We became addicted to that, ”she says in an interview with MOPO. In Hamburg they missed the bagels and found that something like this was still missing in the city.

The operators did not shy away from Corona: The temptation was too great when they were offered the shop space at Mühlenkamp 1. “We thought it would fit in here perfectly. We had to seize the opportunity, because you can’t get to such a coveted location so quickly, ”Laura Nahe explains.

The boutique next door had shrunk – and thus created space for the to-go shop, which could open on time for the good weather and the easing. “We also hoped that the upswing would come in the summer and that people would want to do new things again.”

The bagel bar doesn’t have much space: there are two seats by the window. The operators are still waiting for the area in front of the store to be approved for outdoor catering. Until then, they are betting that the Hamburgers will take a bagel with them – in the style of New York.
