Despite complaint, Morton auctions historic documents of Independence

Morton it did carry out the auction of documents with indications of Documentary Heritage of the Nation, even though the General Archive of the Nation (AGN) filed a complaint with the General Prosecutor of the Republic.

This afternoon, Morton held the auction “Books and documents on the Independence of Mexico, the First Empire and the First Republic”, initially consisting of 252 lots; however, the AGN indicated that 75 lots have indications that would classify them as Documentary Heritage of the Nation.

Among the documents was Lot 77, a letter from Miguel Hidalgo in which “Mr. Colonel Narciso de la Canal to Become Part of the Armed Movement. Headquarters of the American Army in Dolores, October 4, 1810 ”; However, when the time came, the moderator of the bid said
that lot “is retired”.

Lot 77 that planned to be sold for between 100,000 and 150,000 pesos was the only one withdrawn in the entire auction of 252 lots, an act that was carried out despite the criminal complaint filed by the General Archive of the Nation against Morton and whoever is responsible.

Although a lot was withdrawn, 251 lots were auctioned, achieving the sale of several documents, one of them was the letter of Jose Maria Liceaga, Jose maria morelos and pavon, as well as Jose Maria Cos.

The letter classified as lot 95 is “addressed to Commander Juan Antonio Romero on the Formation of a Military Academy. Uruapan, November 22, 1814 ”, and it was sold for 96 thousand pesos, the second highest figure that was reached during the event.

Another document sold was Lot 99, made up of two letters from Agustín de Iturbide – one from 1808 addressed to Colonel Conde de Casa Rul and the second addressed to Captain M. Agustín de Elorza with a message for Lieutenant Colonel Manuel de G. y Zamora , in 1816–, for 19,200 pesos.

Of the 251 lots that were auctioned, not all were sold, one of those cases was the “Letter to the Supreme Court of Justice of the State of Durango. Mexico, January 29, 1828 ”, by Vicente Guerrero (lot 160); the “Edict on the Prohibition of Insurgent Texts. Mexico, July 8, 1815 “, by Manuel de Flores (lot 97), or the” Band on the Freedom to Trade Salted Meat and Tallow. Mexico, November 26, 1804 ”, signed by Miguel Hidalgo (lot 69).

Despite the fact that they were not sold, the auctioneers indicated that if there is someone interested in acquiring a product, they should contact them.

The auction “Books and documents on the Independence of Mexico, the First Empire and the First Republic”It started at 5:00 p.m. and lasted approximately 2 and a half hours; after the AGN reported in a statement that its legal director Marco Palafox Schmid filed a criminal complaint.

The AGN argued that the 75 lots of documents deal with testimonies of various correspondence exchanged by leaders of the Independence movement, edicts related to the formation of the first Mexican empire and parties on the establishment of the republican government after the ephemeral first empire.

Among its arguments, the institution pointed out that article 77 of the General Archives Law establishes that the AGN must be informed when the transfer of ownership of historical documents of public interest is carried out or is intended, and in the event of omitting said notification, the AGN may request the expropriation of said documents, but this never happened.

EL UNIVERSAL asked Morton for a position on the complaint, but he did not respond.
