Eliza Hittman: “Never Seldom Sometimes Always”
Superiors who grope her, classmates who call her a slut, strangers who strip her with looks: all of this is normal for Autumn and her cousin Skylar. The teenagers from Pennsylvania inevitably accept the everyday abuse. If it gets too much, they fight back. Together they are strong. But then something happens that overwhelms them: Autumn is pregnant, unwanted. An abortion seems utopian for the 17-year-old, at least in the provincial town in which she lives. Director and screenwriter Eliza Hittman describes her film as an everyday thriller that addresses MeToo reality. She wanted to implement “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” years ago. When Donald Trump was elected, she knew: Time’s up. At the Berlinale there was the Silver Bear for the long-lasting drama.
