Despite Boll’s defeat: Düsseldorf celebrates in Bremen

Borussia Düsseldorf won the top game of the 8th matchday and defended second place in the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL). On Wednesday, the record champions won 3-2 at SV Werder Bremen and celebrated their sixth win of the season.

The spectators in the Klaus-Dieter-Fischer-Halle watched a table tennis thriller between two top teams for a good three and a half hours before the winner was found. Borussia Düsseldorf finally prevailed 3-2 at SV Werder Bremen and thus secured their fourth win from their last five games. With 12:4 points, the record champions kept Bremen at bay and defended second place in the table. Werder follows in fourth place in the table with 10:6 points.

“It was a table tennis battle,” said Düsseldorf coach Danny Heister afterwards. “The game actually didn’t deserve a loser. Everyone fought brilliantly – absolute madness. I am very proud of my team.” Bremen’s Mattias Falck said: “Overall it was a very good team match at a very high level. Düsseldorf was particularly strong at the end.”

Mattias Falck cannot be defeated

The hosts were only one point away from a possible home win. Andrei Putuntica and Kirill Gerassimenko led 10:9 in the last set of the doubles against Anton Källberg and Borgar Haug, but the Bremen team was unable to win another point. The Borussia doubles fended off the match point with great coolness and took the following two points for a 3:2 (11:8, 6:11, 11:4, 5:11, 12:10) victory. Källberg had previously celebrated in the singles and defeated Gerassimenko 3:2 (11:6, 4:11, 10:12, 11:8, 11:7). Timo Boll was also successful with 3:0 (11:8, 11:5, 14:12) against Marcelo Aguirre. Mattias Falck, on the other hand, could not be defeated: The Swede first beat Kay Stumper 3:1 (11:5, 11:8, 7:11, 11:7) and finally Boll with 3:1 (8:11, 11: 9, 11:8, 11:7). “He is a legend of the sport,” Falck said afterwards about Boll. “It was great to be able to play against him again – maybe we’ll face each other again in the play-offs.”
