The Winterthur governor’s office has sued two parents because, in their opinion, they wanted to undermine their daughter’s discount which was denied. But the district court clearly sees things differently.

No time? Blue News summary for you

  • The Winterthur governor’s office accuses a couple of parents of wanting to undermine their daughter’s discount, which was denied by the school’s administration.
  • The parents had traveled to relatives in the Caribbean for ten weeks, but had previously unregistered their daughters completely.
  • When we returned, however, there were problems registering in school again.
  • The judge gave a clear verdict; she continued to stand in defense across the table.

For the guardian of a family from the Winterthur area, it is a “Kafkaesque judicial odyssey” that should be brought to an end quickly. The district court then ensures a clear decision quickly and clearly.

The course of the case is rather strange and confusing: the Winterthur governor’s office accuses a couple of parents of wanting to undermine their daughter’s concession, which was rejected by the school administration. Parents should be fined 2,000 francs each. Since they opposed the penalty orders, an assessment by the court was necessary.

As the “NZZ” writes, in September 2022 the parents asked the primary school in their residential community to exempt their two daughters from tuition. The family wanted to travel to visit relatives in the Caribbean for more than the two week holiday.

The younger girl has no problem, but the school administration rejected the application for the older girl because an application for her had already been approved in 2017. It is a common practice that only one application of the such as agreeing during the entire school period.

The parents now accepted, withdrew the approved application and expelled the two girls completely from school from 20 March 2023 due to a longer stay abroad. The problem is that, according to the primary law regulation, deregistration can only be done after an absence of at least twelve weeks. Right, maybe the parents thought, and off they went to visit their relatives in the Caribbean.

The Winterthur Governor’s Office is involved

But now it becomes very strange: When the family travels back to Switzerland at the beginning of June for family reasons so that the period of absence is shorter than the required twelve weeks , the children are entitled to be enrolled in school again. Very special indeed, one would think. But the school administration didn’t like it at all and called the Winterthur governor’s office.

It was obvious to the pillar’s office: it was never expected to stay abroad for more than twelve weeks due to family reasons, the deterioration of the mother’s circulation and the nostalgia of the youngest daughter, which was not enough to return. The children were away from class for a total of ten weeks without an excuse.

Parents behave in an excellent manner

Of course, the defender sees it completely differently. Unforeseen events can happen at any time and cause plans to change. The immediate enrollment of the children in school by the parents upon their return was a good example.

The judge gave a clear decision, she followed the defense throughout and completely freed the parents from the charges of the governor’s office. In their view, the parents did not act with the intention of overriding the school board’s decision. The earlier return was not planned either. So of course everything is without problems…
