Network technology 5G very complex, and standardization in it was made by many companies. The company with the largest share in this technology is Huawei.
The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is the body behind the development of 5G (and other communications standards and protocols), and it includes companies from various industries, Huawei being one of them.
In terms of the amount of technology built for 5G and baked into 3GPP, Huawei is the clear winner. According to ABI Research, Huawei made 15,000 approved contributions for 5G out of their 43,000 total contributions.
Reporting from Phone Arena, Monday (3/4/2023) Huawei is listed in the category of network infrastructure companies in 3GPP, along with Ericsson (11 thousand approved contributions), and Nokia (7 thousand approved contributions).
In addition, Samsung is ranked 5th, ZTE is ranked 6th, and NEC is ranked 20th in the list of network infrastructure companies. While the chip-making companies on the list are Qualcomm, Intel, and MediaTek. The handset manufacturers are LG at 8th, Vivo at 10th, Oppo at 12th, Apple at -15th, Lenovo and Xiaomi at 16th and 18th respectively.
Yes, Huawei is the company that has deposited the most 5G technology into 3GPP compared to the companies that have been named. But ironically, Huawei — until recently — was not allowed to make cellphones with 5G networks.
This still has something to do with Huawei’s entry into the US government’s Entity List or blacklist, which makes them unable to use US-made technology, in this case 5G support. They can indeed use chips such as Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, but their 5G capabilities have been circumcised so they can only capture 4G signals.
