An emergency order is in force on and around the Malieveld on Sunday afternoon. Although a maximum of two hundred demonstrators could have come, the number of protesters has now risen to several thousand. Train traffic to The Hague has been stopped and the police are asking people who are still on the way to turn around.
The protesters are surrounded by the police. At least one person has been arrested, according to images Twitter. Otherwise it is quiet. Those present do not keep enough distance from one another.
Because the police want to prevent it from becoming even busier on the Malieveld, the train traffic to the royal city has been stopped. Trains still depart from The Hague.
On the last Sunday before the parliamentary elections, opponents of the cabinet policy will demonstrate on the Malieveld. The demonstration was organized by the Netherlands in Resistance, away with this cabinet. The demonstration was to start around 2 p.m. and a maximum of 200 people were allowed to come. But an hour earlier, more than two hundred demonstrators had already been present.
The police keep off demonstrators and block the road with buses to prevent people from walking from The Hague Central Station to Malieveld. The same applies to other access roads in the city. Most demonstrators also come by public transport.
“This is location A. If we are knocked out of here, we will go to location B,” said organizer Michel Reijinga of the Netherlands in Resistance prior to the demonstration. He does not say which location this concerns.
Another demonstration is underway around the corner from the Koekamp. There, a few dozen people demonstrate against climate change. A maximum of two hundred people are allowed there too. It is neat and quiet.
