Desperate search for missing submarine

If the vessel is still intact, it is assumed that the oxygen will last until Friday evening Norwegian time.

– We are maximizing our efforts today, says Major General Achmad Riad, spokesman for the defense in Indonesia.

On Thursday, the military discovered an unidentified object between 50 and 100 meters deep. The search crews hope this may be the missing submarine KRI Nanggala 402.

Several countries are participating

But there are fears that the submarine may be further down, at a depth it is not built to withstand. Oil spills in the area may be a sign that the vessel has been damaged.

Both Australia, the United States, India, Malaysia and Singapore have said they will assist in the search off the coast of the holiday island of Bali. Singapore is sending a vessel specially designed to rescue submarines.

The plan is that a total of 24 ships and a patrol aircraft will participate in the search on Friday. They want to focus on the area where the oil spill was found.

Training assignments

The German-built submarine was reported missing during a training mission on Wednesday. The contact was broken shortly after the vessel asked for permission to dive.

The submarine was built in 1978 and has since been in the service of several countries, including Greece, India, Argentina and Turkey.

A spokesman for the Indonesian Navy has previously said that the submarine is most likely between 600 and 700 meters deep. It is believed that it can only withstand depths down to 500 meters.
