Desperate Disney lures chefs and chambermaids with hefty bonuses

Just like in the Dutch hospitality industry, there is also a great shortage of cooks, chambermaids and waiters in the US. Theme park company Disney promises new employees a signing bonus of 1000 dollars (840 euros) to entice them to take the job.

It concerns kitchen staff and people in the household of Disney resorts in Florida. A why earns at least $18 an hour, a chambermaid $16 an hour.

First work, then the bonus

The bonus is not immediately paid out. Whoever is hired will be paid $250 after 90 days. The remaining $750 requires someone to be employed for at least 150 days. Tax still has to be paid on the bonus. The scheme applies until October 2 of this year.

The search comes a few months after the company laid off about 32,000 employees because it had to close the theme parks for months due to the corona pandemic. With the rapid rollout of vaccines and further relaxation of measures, the US economy is recovering rapidly. This also increases the demand for personnel.

Paid internship as a lure

Disney is the largest theme park operator in the world. In Florida alone, the group has four theme parks and dozens of hotels. To get people back, the company also offers paid summer internships. Students who sign up for it can live in special apartments while working in the resorts.
