State Secretary Blokhuis will place 3-MMC on the list of prohibited substances of the Opium Act. This makes the drug illegal and therefore less easy to obtain. Blokhuis also wants to warn in this way for all health risks that its use has.
The State Secretary of Health made the decision together with Minister Grapperhaus of Justice and Security. Signs emerged that 3-MMC is leading to an increasing number of incidents. It is intended that the ban will take effect in the autumn.
“3-MMC is becoming increasingly popular, especially among young people,” says Blokhuis. “The legal status gives this drug a false, innocent image, we have to get rid of that as soon as possible. It is dangerous stuff, which we have to warn our young people about and protect against.”
Blokhuis points out that the drug is potentially addictive. NOS on 3 also paid attention to this earlier, calling 3-MMC, also known as ‘cat’, an “assassin”.
