Desi Bouterse has been seen in her own country until at least January 9. According to Star News the legal team of the wanted former president of Suriname was at Bouterse’s home that day.
Times of Suriname previously wrote that Bouterse left the country in mid-December. The newspaper reported on Saturday that the former president flew to Brazil and then went to Venezuela.
The 78-year-old Bouterse has been wanted by the Surinamese Public Prosecution Service since Friday, after he failed to report to prison to serve his sentence.
In December, the former president was sentenced on appeal to twenty years in prison for his leading role in the murders of fifteen political opponents in the 1980s, the so-called December murders.
The last time Bouterse appeared in public was at a political meeting on December 16, four days before the conviction.
