After his conviction, Desi Bouterse consults with the Surinamese government about a “soft landing”. Bouterse said this on Thursday to a Surinamese radio station. Last week, Bouterse was sentenced by the Supreme Court to a prison sentence of twenty years.
Bouterse is still at large after the conviction. According to Bouterse, the Surinamese government has offered “a soft landing”. It was not clear what such a soft landing entails.
President Chan Santokhi’s spokesperson could not confirm whether the Surinamese government is in talks with Bouterse.
The Supreme Court sentenced former President Bouterse to a 20-year prison sentence last Wednesday for his role in the December murders of 1982. The Public Prosecution Service did not immediately arrest Bouterse.
A day later, the Public Prosecution Service suspended the execution of the prison sentence by the Public Prosecution Service for eight days, after Bouterse’s lawyer announced that he wanted to submit a request for clemency.
Bouterse has not yet submitted a formal request for clemency to President Santokhi, he said in the interview with the radio station LIM FM. His lawyer is said to be still working on that. Bouterse said on the radio that he did not think it would be appropriate to make statements about this as long as discussions are ongoing with the government.
