TRIER. In front of almost 1,200 fans in the Trier arena, the RÖMERSTROM Gladiators won their first home win of the season yesterday evening with 89:75 against Uni Baskets Paderborn. The best scorers on Trier’s side were Dan Monteroso and Brody Clarke with 19 points each. The next game will take place on October 2nd. at the PSK Karlsruhe LIONS, as reported by the gladiators.
With Garai Zeeb, Derrick Gordon, Thomas Grün, Jonas Grof and Radoslav Pekovic, the Gladiators started their first home game of the 2021/2022 season. The gladiators started the game unfocused and were only able to successfully manage one of the first five attacks. Paderborn was a bit more alert and took a 4: 9 lead at the beginning (5th minute of the game). With three minutes remaining in the first quarter, new signing Jonas Niedermanner was also able to make his debut in the Gladiators’ Jersey. At the end of the first quarter, the hosts got going better – at the first quarter break the scoreboard showed 17:17.
In the second quarter, too, the game remained balanced for the time being. Both teams consistently played their systems and thus earned good and easy degrees close to the board. A high intensity on the defensive required good ball movement from both teams. On the Trier side, Dan Monteroso showed a great performance and met extremely high percentage from the outside. No team was able to break away decisively until half-time and so it went into the dressing room with a 38:39 from Trier’s point of view.
At the beginning of the second half the gladiators were wide awake and showed fast and efficient team basketball. The hosts quickly turned the game back in their favor and led after five minutes in the third quarter with 49:46. Over the entire third quarter, the Trier now showed an enormously improved performance. Fast drives, good kick-outs and aggressive defense ensured a well-deserved 64:53 lead for the Mosel townspeople.
In the last part of the game, the hosts kept the pace and intensity high. Six and a half minutes before the end of the game, the Trier lead had increased to 15 points (70:55, 34th minute of the game). Although the Paderborn people were able to use a short, unfocused phase of the gladiators to get closer again, they could not preserve this. On the contrary, the Mosel townspeople increased the pace again and pulled away to 87:68 one minute before the end. The last minute of the game belonged again to the Uni Baskets, who could still do some cosmetic results – in the end the Gladiators deservedly won with 89:75.
Marco van den Berg, Head Coach of Gladiators Trier: “Unfortunately, the first half wasn’t that good. We can still play much, much better and we will soon do so. Especially the defense in the guard positions had too little intensity, we have to work on that ”.
For Trier: Derrick Gordon (15 points), Dan Monteroso (19), Garai Zeeb (9), Tom Demmer (DNP), Jonas Grof (7), Thomas Grün (11), Jonathan Almstedt (0), Brody Clarke ( 19) and Radoslav Pekovic (4)
