In May 2023, stumbling blocks were laid in Schmalnau for 16 murdered Jewish citizens. 24 descendants of the Kupfer and Tannenwald families from the USA, England, South Africa and Israel came to this solemn ceremony to commemorate their ancestors and relatives.
Among the guests was Meyer Wisnovitz, a doctor in Eilat, Israel, who, impressed by the experience, convinced his 86-year-old mother Doreen Badash to come to Germany for the first time. She was the third daughter of Hermann and Bertha Kupfer, who managed to escape to South Africa from Brückenau with two daughters in 1937. Doreen was born there in 1938 and is the last survivor of this generation. What is amazing is that she still speaks the German language, which she learned through conversations with her mother and grandmother. She was accompanied by her daughter Sandi, who lives in Sydney, Australia, and her daughter-in-law Rina from Eilat.
Under the leadership of local mayor Daniel Kreis and Ms. Brigitte Füller-Jerwin, who maintains contact with the Jewish families, the guests followed the stumbling blocks and looked at the still existing copper house on the main street, the ancestral home of the two large copper families. After a typical German coffee with Rhöner smear cake and lively conversations and exchange of information, there was a visit to the Jewish cemetery in Weyhers, where 11 direct ancestors and relatives of the Kupfer family are buried. Visits to the surrounding area, the city of Fulda and the Buchenwald concentration camp were on the agenda for the next few days. The return flight to Israel ended the impressive and moving visit on October 27th. (ms/pm) +++
