Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Monday criticized the Manhattan, New York attorney general who is indicting former President Donald Trump in the “pornographic actress” case.
DeSantis pledged that his office would not interfere with Trump’s extradition to New York, according to CNN.
The United States is preparing for the possibility of a criminal indictment, or even a symbolic arrest of former President Donald Trump, in the case of paying a sum of money in 2016 to a porn actress believed to have had an affair with her, in what the billionaire described as a “campaign of persecution”, calling for demonstrations. According to the news agency “Agence France Presse”.
But DeSantis, the potential Republican candidate for the US presidency for the year 2024, did not support the former president, and instead seemed to mock the situation in which Trump has put himself, especially as he is trying to return to political life by running for the presidential elections.
The Congressional Judicial Committee had asked the New York Attorney General to disclose details of his investigation into Trump’s use of distorted testimonies to influence the elections, according to Reuters.
The investigation into Trump relates to legal allegations against him that he paid money to a woman to buy her silence about a relationship they had, before the 2016 US presidential elections, according to the agency.
The case witnessed a new escalation after Trump accused the Manhattan Attorney General of being “corrupt and politicized”, and called on his supporters to protest.
According to CNN, the grand jury is in the final stages of determining whether Trump should face charges over his payment to porn star, Stormy Daniels, in connection with an alleged relationship between them.
“I don’t know what would happen in a case of paying money to buy a porn star’s silence about some kind of alleged affair,” DeSantis said as laughter broke out at a news conference in Panama City, Florida. “I can’t talk about it,” according to CNN.
“I have real issues to deal with here in Florida,” DeSantis added.
A year and a half before the presidential elections that will be held in the year 2024, Trump announced on Saturday through his “Truth Social” platform that he expects to be “arrested” on Tuesday, according to “Agence France Presse”.
Citing “leaks” from the New York State Attorney General’s office, Trump expected criminal charges to be brought against him after a years-long Manhattan District Attorney’s investigation led by Attorney General Alvin Bragg.
And if he is arrested or even charged, this will set a precedent for a former president in the United States, as no American president has ever been charged, whether he was in office or left the White House.
