DeSantis passes law to deal with squatters in Florida – 2024-03-29 13:02:50

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed Bill 621, which addresses the problems of illegal home squatters within the state, a situation that has gained strength in recent years.

The measure will allow people who illegally occupy empty structures or unused land to be evicted without the need for a lease agreement sanctioned by the owner.

The regulations will come into force on July 1 of this year, and seek to provide quick remedies for owners who are affected by the actions of these people. This is because these owners often have to endure costly legal battles to evict illegal occupants, a process that also took a long time.

“You’re not going to come here and stay on someone’s property. That is not going to happen in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said when speaking about the importance of the new law.

The regulations also establish criminal sanctions for those who illegally occupy other people’s property, including fines for damages and charges for forging lease contracts, false deeds and for attempting to sell stolen property.

In accordance with Forbesthe new law is being received positively by the affected community, such as Kevin Harris, who faced problems evicting a squatter in Miami Beach in 2021.

Harris maintains that she is hopeful that this legislation will be a positive step for the state of Florida. Likewise, Marty Kiar, Broward County property appraiser, considers the measure a good thing, highlighting the importance it will have in the fight against this type of illegal activities.

Another law approved by DeSantis

This new law is added to the new regulations to prevent homeless people from camping in public spaces in Florida, which will come into force on October 1.

With this, homeless citizens will be mobilized to specific spaces where they can stay for a year, under the obligation not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs.

The measure also notes that starting in January of next year, residents, local business owners and the Florida state attorney general will be able to file a lawsuit to prevent any city or county from allowing homeless encampments on public property.
