Derrick White expresses desire for extension with Celtics: Boston’s Finances in Focus

Since his arrival in February 2021, Derrick White has had a great story with the Celtics. The guard far exceeded expectations and seems to be enjoying Massachusetts, so much so that he would like to sign an extension this summer.

Celtics finances are definitely a big topic this summer! After the extensions of Brown and Porzingis in the wake of his transfer, it’s Derrick White who would like to scratch his extension. The guard recently announced it to ESPN’s Malika Andrews, while recalling his love for Boston.

“I love living here in Boston. It would be great to sign an extension. We’ll see what happens [d’ici la fin du mois de septembre] but I am very happy since I arrived in Boston. Now I just focus on the upcoming season” – Derrick White for ESPN NBA Today

White’s contribution has been extremely valuable to the Celtics over the past two years. Very quickly integrated into the workforce, he contributed to the run in the 2022 Playoffs until the NBA Finals. This season, he hasn’t missed a regular game and posted a good average of 12.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists on 46.2% shooting, including 38.1% from 3-pointers. His defensive contribution was also important, as he formed one of the best defensive backcourts in the league with Marcus Smart, and even earned a place in the All-Defensive Second Team.

In view of these more than satisfactory performances, it would make sense for Boston to extend Derrick White immediately… if he didn’t have a two-year contract yet. The Celtics have no risk of losing their leader in the coming months, and are therefore absolutely not in a hurry. On the contrary, they must take the time to reflect in order to better manage their finances, which will suffer a big blow with the record extension of Jaylen Brown and that of Jayson Tatum to manage next summer.

But with this in mind, Brad Stevens might have an interest in extending his player right now because Derrick White may cost more in a year or two than it did this summer. On the one hand, because the amount of NBA contracts continues to increase. On the other hand, because the guy will recover the position of titular leader, and the responsibilities that go with it. Imagine that he gives us a season in 17-5-5 punctuated by a new selection in a All-Defensive Team ! The friend Derrick could immediately be more greedy and use his performance as leverage to ask for a bigger check.

After discussing his contract history, White also spoke about the new role he will have next season. Et he seems ready for the challenge, he who has already held the position of starting point guard in San Antonio.

“I’m just going to have the ball in my hands more, which I’ve done for most of my career. So I’m just going to go back to what I was doing before and put my teammates in the best conditions. With Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and now Kristaps Porzingis, I have a lot of talented players around me, it makes my job easier.

Derrick White is enjoying Boston, and he’s open to an extension this summer. There is no doubt that the management will think about it, but negotiations are likely to be difficult given the current state of the Celtics’ finances. Case to follow!
